Dieter Roth

Dieter Roth (1930 — 1998), was born Karl-Dietrich Roth in Hanover, Germany, but moved with his family to Bern Switzerland in 1947. In Bern he was trained as a commercial artist, thereby becoming a skilled draftsman and printmaker. Eventually he left all that to become an artist working with the avant-garde trends which included concrete poetry, mail-art, Fluxus, performance, and installations. After his marital divorce, he moved in 1964 to New Haven, CN, supported by his friend Norman Ives. He worked in Ives’ studio (which also started to publish some of Dieter’s bookworks as editions) while hoping to teach in the MFA programs at Yale University. When the latter proved not possible, he moved to New York city. That started an itinerant lifestyle with exhibitions of his works all over the world. He is world-renowned for his experiments with bookworks, and biodegradable art works made of rotting foods. 

One of the many bookworks by Diter Roth is the "AC" book. When I met Dieter during my last year at Yale University he was working on an edition of one of his books called AC. This book consisted of a systemic series of
