Norman Ives

Norman Seaton Ives (1923—1978) was a graphic designer, artist, educator, and publisher of monographs and art portfolios. He was married to Constance Taffinder, and they had four sons. He attended Wesleyan University (1950); then Yale University (1952) where he studied under Joseph Albers. After graduating from Yale, he joined the faculty at the Yale University School of Art and became professor of graphic design at Yale in 1974. He was a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London, the University of Hawaii, and RISD. In 1958 he and his colleague Sewell Sillman founded Ives-Sillman. They first published Josef Albers: Interaction of Color (1963), followed by monographs on other artists including Walker Evans, Roy Lichtenstein, Ad Reinhardt, and Jean Dubuffet. His work can be found in many public art and museum collections.
