Printed Matter

These selection of experiments in Concretism use the Documentracing system as actions to extract parts from various objects of printed matter, like magazines, bulletins, and catalogues. Each object used was spontaneously approached to extract parts according to the documentracing system defined for that object. All pages of the object’s printed pages were simply “read” from front to back, including the cover. In this sequence of time single “units” were extracted from each page via a predetermined system. That so-called “unit” was determined at the very point of engagement with a page. The “unit” could be a single image outline, a group of marks (e.g. all comas within a body of text), a group of words, or any other group of relational parts. Each unit in the composition of the drawing was always in the relative position of the original printed page it was traced from.
