word AS image: designer’s voice

This topic deals with the designer’s attitude or “voice” — which is an inescapable phenomenon in design, no matter how “objective” one intends to be in the design of texts. Let me briefly go back to that diagram of “word and image equations” I shared earlier.

The word is what we started with...

In your inquiry to present the word you will become aware of the typographic implications for that. There are many, many ways that you can play with the visual elements for the word via letters, sizes, spaces, structures, etc. You might also become aware of your personal role in determining that presentation—which might be affected by your mood, feelings, degree of interest, or preconceptions.

So, i’d like to share these influential aspects on the design process with this model that studies the implications of the designer’s voice or attitude—which might be of a neutral, affirmative, or critical.
