Mary Ellen Solt

Mary Ellen Solt (1920—2007) was professor emeritus of Comparative Literature at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she had taught from 1967 to 1991. She is especially known for her works in concrete poetry. She developed an interest in concrete poetry in the early 1960s and her first concrete poem, "White Rose," was published in Ian Hamilton Finlay's Poor. Old. Tired. Horse. in 1963. In 1969 she published her work in a small book called Flowers in Concrete in the letter press shop of the Indiana University Graphic Design program. Solt then edited Concrete Poetry: A World View (Indiana University Press, 1968), edited with Willis Barnstone, which remains one of the major anthologies on concrete poetry.
