RISD Graphic Design 1977

The Graphic Design Department at RISD organized an exhibition of student work in 1967. The exhibit intended to share the department’s vision of the relatively new field of graphic design at that time, and publicly share how the department's curriculum prepared students for this practice. Having collected an immense amount of information about the substance of this curriculum's pedagogy Tom decided it was worth sharing in this booklet that documents the works in the exhibition. Most importantly, the booklet also shared the department’s vision for this new field of practice, and it allowed for a national and international distribution. The local printer that was most used by RISD its graphic design faculty, Foremost Printing, granted funding for this publication.

The exhibit followed by the booklet, were both informationally designed as a didactic statement of the department’s philosophy and means to achieve those principles in a newly established curriculum.

Publishing this booklet also was important as the department had achieved national notoriety in its definition of the practice of graphic design, including the pedagogical requirements to educate students for this practice. Once distributed nationally and internationally, it proved of great value as an exemplification of developing programs, as well as in raising the standards of design pedagogy.

The booklet’s design was by Tom Ockerse, who led the philosophical and practical efforts for the department’s curriculum and continued to do so until he stepped down as department head in 1991.
