HUMANITY

In 1987 Tony Balis established The Humanity Foundation (later changed to The Humanity Initiative), with its mission of “encouraging people to understand this planet as our common home.” To initiate “a conversation with the world,” he began publishing the journal humanity, two-thirds non-fiction, one-third photography. Three issues were produced: the preview in 1991; the premier in July 1996; the second issue in July 1997. Tom Ockerse became an integral partner in this effort and was responsible for formulating the magazine’s design principles and its “visual voice,” as well as participating in editorial strategy. The HUMANITY magazine won awards for its design and production excellence. While copies of the three issues of ran out years ago, some remain available from TOE—but only as a set of three.
